When to use
"Use when gradual changes may produce sudden shifts. Identify the thresholds beyond which the system's behavior qualitatively changes. Below the threshold, changes are incremental; above it, the system reorganizes."
Example
"A product's adoption grows gradually from 1% to 5% to 10% of the market. At ~16% (the tipping point for many social phenomena), adoption suddenly accelerates as network effects kick in. The gradual phase and the tipping phase require different strategies."
Common misuse
"Extrapolating linearly through a tipping point. Before the tipping point, growth looks linear; after, it is exponential. Linear extrapolation underestimates post-tipping-point growth and overestimates pre-tipping-point stability."
