Acknowledge how early decisions constrain future options through accumulated consequences
When to use
"Use when early decisions seem to constrain later options disproportionately. Recognize path dependence — the current state is shaped by historical decisions, not just current conditions. Some paths are reversible; others are not."
Example
"A team chose a database 5 years ago. Today, the database is suboptimal, but migrating would require rewriting 200 queries, retraining 20 developers, and migrating 5TB of data. The early decision created path dependence — the cost of reversal now exceeds the cost of living with the suboptimal choice."
Common misuse
"Assuming path dependence is destiny. Some paths can be reversed with sufficient investment; the question is whether the investment is worth it. Evaluate reversal cost honestly rather than assuming it is impossible."
