Homeostasis/ Dynamic Equilibrium
Understand self-regulating mechanisms maintaining stable states despite disturbances
When to use
"Use when a system maintains a stable state despite disturbances. Understand the homeostatic mechanism — the balancing loops that detect deviation and apply correction. Disruptions to the mechanism cause instability."
Example
"Body temperature is homeostatic — sweating cools when hot, shivering warms when cold. The mechanism maintains 37C despite external temperature variation. Disrupting the mechanism (fever, hypothermia) causes instability that the body cannot self-correct."
Common misuse
"Interpreting stability as health. A system can be stable in a bad state (a team that has stopped trying to improve is stable but stagnant). Homeostasis maintains whatever state it is regulating, including undesirable ones."
