When to use

"Use when analyzing feedback between identity and environment. Recognize that identities shape how contexts are interpreted, and contexts reinforce or reshape identities. The loop is not one-directional."

Example

"A junior engineer joins a team that treats questions as weakness (context). They adopt a figure-it-out-alone identity to fit in. That identity makes them less likely to ask questions, which reinforces the team norm. The loop persists even after senior engineers who set the norm leave."

Common misuse

"Analyzing identity or context in isolation. They do not ask questions because they are shy (identity-only) misses that the context punishes questions. The team just needs a question-friendly culture (context-only) misses that existing members have already internalized the old norm."
