When to use

"Use when a compound claim is hard to test as a whole. Break it into independent sub-hypotheses, each testable separately. If any sub-hypothesis fails, the compound claim fails."

Example

"This feature will increase revenue is a compound claim. Decompose — (1) users will discover the feature, (2) users who discover it will use it, (3) users who use it will convert more, (4) the increased conversion will exceed the feature's cost. Each can be tested independently."

Common misuse

"Testing the compound claim as a whole and, when it fails, not knowing which sub-hypothesis failed. A failed compound test tells you it did not work; a failed sub-hypothesis test tells you why."
