Emergence
Recognize higher-order behavior arising from component interactions beyond individual properties
When to use
"Use when a system's behavior cannot be predicted from its components alone. Look for properties that emerge from interactions — wetness from water molecules, consciousness from neurons, traffic jams from individual drivers."
Example
"A flock of birds moves as a coherent entity with no central leader. The flocking behavior emerges from three simple rules each bird follows (separation, alignment, cohesion). The beauty is in the interaction, not in any individual bird."
Common misuse
"Reducing emergent phenomena to component properties and concluding you understand the system. Understanding neurons does not explain consciousness; understanding drivers does not explain traffic jams."
