When to use

"Use when a system is adapting and there is risk of losing critical knowledge in the process. Preserve critical knowledge explicitly while allowing other knowledge to be updated. Prevents regression during adaptation."

Example

"A team migrating a codebase to a new framework must preserve the business logic (critical knowledge) while updating the technical implementation (adaptable knowledge). Without explicit preservation, the migration may introduce subtle business logic bugs."

Common misuse

"Preserving everything, which prevents adaptation. Not all knowledge is critical; some is obsolete and should be forgotten. Distinguish critical knowledge (preserve) from obsolete knowledge (discard)."
