When to use

"Use when a position feels obviously correct and you want to stress-test it. Construct the strongest possible argument for the opposite position. If you cannot, you may not understand the issue well enough to hold a confident view."

Example

"A team is confident they should build in-house rather than buy. Contra-logic — the strongest argument for buying is that the vendor's economies of scale will always exceed their internal team's, and the engineering time saved can be spent on differentiation. This reveals the real question — is this feature a differentiator or a commodity?"

Common misuse

"Constructing a strawman opposite (a weak version of the opposing view) and then demolishing it. Contra-logic only works if the opposing argument is stronger than the one you would naturally make."
