When to use

"Use when working memory is the bottleneck. Group related items into chunks (typically 4-7 items) to fit within cognitive capacity. Phone numbers, credit card numbers, and ID codes are chunked for this reason."

Example

"A 16-digit credit card number is presented as 4 groups of 4 (1234 5678 9012 3456) rather than a single 16-digit string. The chunking makes it readable, memorable, and verifiable."

Common misuse

"Chunking arbitrarily — grouping items that have no meaningful relationship. Chunks must be meaningful units; random grouping adds cognitive load instead of reducing it."
